Stephanie Mills was born in Brooklyn in 1957 and is a singer, songwriter, and stage performer. She began her musical journey by singing sang gospel music at Brooklyn's Cornerstone Baptist Church and at the age of 9, she made her performance debut by appearing in the Broadway musical Maggie Flynn. That year, she also won The Amateur Hour talent contest six weeks straight at New York's renowned Apollo Theater. When she was 11, she became the opening act for the legendary R&B and soul group The Isley Brothers and it wasn't long before she got a record deal. Her debut studio album (Movin' in the Right Direction) came out in 1975 and her breakthrough came with her second album (What Cha' Gonna Do with My Lovin') going Gold in the US. Her musical style is best described as a blend of R&B, soul, and dance pop. She went on to have an illustrious career with 16 studio albums, 11 compilation albums, 41 singles, a Grammy Award (for Best Rhythm and Blues Vocal Performance – Female), and an American Music Award (for Favorite Female Artist – Soul / Rhythm and Blues).
